APEC leaders, CEO comments at Hawaii summit (Reuters)

HONOLULU (Reuters) ? Following are quotes from leaders of Pacific Rim countries and business executive attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit on Saturday.

On the agenda — promoting free trade and liberalizing regulations in order to strengthen economic growth.

JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER YOSHIHIKO NODA

CHINA: opening remarks at a bi-lateral meeting with China’s President Hu Jintao:

“We had a brief chat at Cannes. But I’m very delighted to have this occasion today to exchange views on many issues. Bilateral ties between Japan and China are very important for the region as well as for the world. It is important to make our ties develop steadily. China’s development represents a great opportunity for our country. I believe it is necessary that both countries deepen our engagement with the region and the international community.”

Noda told reporters after the bilateral:

“Japan and China will be marking the 40th anniversary of the normalization of our ties next year, a major point in the history of our relations. In our talks today, we have agreed to work toward my visit to China by the end of this year.”

RUSSIA: Noda’s remarks on a bilateral with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev:

“We talked about promoting our cooperation in each and every field amid changing security environment in Asia-Pacific. We agreed that although our stances greatly differ when it comes to territorial issues, we will hold practical talks in a quiet environment in order to solve the problem,” Noda told a reporters.

UNITED STATES: Noda’s remarks on U.S.-Japan bilateral:

“I’m very much encouraged by the fact that America is increasing its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, and I do believe that Japan and the United States must work closely together to establish economic goals and also establish security order in this region.”

According to the White House, U.S. President Obama said of their bilateral that he has been impressed by Noda and “the boldness of his vision.” He said the U.S.-Japan relationship was a corner stone of security in the Asia-Pacific and said they would keep working together on commerce and security issues.

JAPANESE TRADE MINISTER YUKIO EDANO

Transpacific PARTNERSHIP: “By and large, participating countries have shown their intention of welcoming Japan’s decision to seek to join the talks. But we cannot afford to be very optimistic. We aim to make progress slowly but steadily,” Edano told reporters on the sidelines of the APEC meeting.

CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER HARPER

“In the past few years, our Government has been aggressively expanding commercial relations with the Asia-Pacific region to create jobs and economic benefits here at home,”

“Our efforts are yielding results. We are maximizing opportunities for our entrepreneurs through innovative trade, investment, air, and science and technology agreements. We are also attracting regional investment to Canada by ensuring a speedier transport of goods through a much strengthened Asia-Pacific Gateway.”

CATERPILLAR INC PRESIDENT RICH LAVIN

U.S.-CHINA FX TENSIONS: “I think it’s inevitable that currency will become a political issue. But we’ve seen that kind of behind-the-scenes discussions and negotiations have been very effective in encouraging China to strengthen their currency and in fact I think it’s strengthened between 35 and 40 percent over the past three or four years.

“So I think the worst thing we can do is encourage a process that may result in some sort of trade friction or a trade war in the two largest economies in the world. At Caterpillar we’re really encouraging continuing behind-the-scenes discussions and negotiations to move China toward a stronger currency.”

FAN GANG, DIRECTOR, CHINA’S NATIONAL ECONOMIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE, and a former policy adviser to the People’s Bank of China.

“If you had $3.2 trillion, where would you put it?” he said, referring to China’s foreign reserves stockpile. “If euro bonds now are in big trouble, should we put it in euro bonds?”

However, Fan said buying bonds issued by the European rescue fund was a “different story” because it is backed by the European Union, making it safer. “If you buy bonds in the market, like a commercial activity, what are you going to buy? You’re not going to buy Italian bonds now. You’re not going to buy Portugal either.”

GOOGLE INC EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN ERIC SCHMIDT

TRADE: Why Asian economies should liberalize trade ties:

“Because they want our stuff. Trust me, they want it. If you look at the view of America in Asia — we have excellent Hollywood films and things like that — but we’re fundamentally the best area for research and new innovation for the industries that they care about. A simple model is that America invents the technology, it’s initially commercialized in places like Korea and Taiwan and then it’s globalized at scale in these vast manufacturing caverns of China.

“So they need what we’re doing. We obviously need access to their products and they help out with our debt. It’s in all of our countries (interests) to have these free trade agreements. It’s in their interest too. I think in many ways America’s best export is its companies, because when we operate by American rules.”

U.S. JOBS OUTLOOK: “We have to be growing pretty well before hiring really starts. The jobless problem is much more severe as a structural problem — by the way it’s much worse in Europe than it is in the U.S. and much worse in Japan. So for my view, the TPP and the other things are part of a much broader package that the president and businesses are pursuing that will ultimately result in job improvement.

But if you just do the math, it takes some number of years just to absorb just the terrible things that occurred in 2008 because of the financial crisis. And so I’m worried that it’s much longer than people are talking about and I say that without humor.

“I mean it’s a very, very serious issue. and the way we need to operate as a businesses as the government, we’ve got to talk about it honestly and say we’ve got figure out a way to get these economies growing faster, and that’s done by investment in the private sector, creating new businesses and all the things we represent, and new markets, free trade etcetera.”

Iran detains 2 Kuwaitis on espionage suspicion (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency says Iranian security has detained two Kuwaiti citizens in southwestern Iran for suspected espionage activities.

Fars quoted Bahram Ilkhaszadeh, governor of Abadan, a town close to Kuwait, as saying that Iran’s security agents detained the two on possession of “spying equipment.”

The news agency did not provide further details.

Iran and Kuwait have accused each other in recent years of running spying rings in the other’s country.

Kuwait in the past accused Iran of masterminding an espionage ring that included surveillance of U.S. and Kuwaiti military sites. Iran denied the claims.

The two neighbors agreed in May to allow the return of ambassadors recalled earlier in a dispute over an alleged Iranian spy ring.

Mexican interior minister killed in helicopter crash (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? Mexican Interior Minister Francisco Blake was killed in a helicopter crash on Friday, a blow to the government as it fights powerful drug cartels.

Television images showed the scattered wreckage of the helicopter on a hillside south of the capital and the government confirmed Blake and the seven others on board were killed. It gave no reason for the crash.

Mexico is locked in a brutal conflict against drug cartels that has killed 45,000 people in the last five years and Blake was a key member of President Felipe Calderon’s security team.

Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard said bad weather may have been responsible for the crash. Speculation could arise that foul play was involved but there has been no indication of this so far.

He is the second interior minister in Calderon’s presidency to be killed in an aircraft crash. The previous one three years earlier was declared an accident.

As interior minister, Blake was responsible for helping Calderon implement his strategy against drug gangs, as well as negotiating with opposition parties in Congress. Lawmakers held a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for Blake.

Mexico’s peso and its IPC stock index lost ground on Friday after Blake’s death.

Calderon’s presidency has been dominated by his decision to send in the army against drug gangs shortly after he took office in December 2006.

The president canceled his appointments for the day and called off a planned trip to Hawaii where he was due to take part in an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

The soaring death toll has battered support for the ruling National Action Party, or PAN, ahead of a presidential election next July, and this year dragged down Calderon’s approval ratings to their lowest levels of his term.

Born in Tijuana on Mexico’s border with the United States, Blake trained as a lawyer and served as a deputy for his home state of Baja California before joining the government.

“There is great sadness, firstly for the loss of a great friend, but also because this is a very severe blow in the midst of a war against criminals inside Mexico,” said Socrates Bastida, a leader of the PAN in Baja California.

On November 4 2008, then interior minister Juan Camilo Mourino and several others died when their small plane crashed next to a major Mexico City boulevard during rush hour.

Investigators concluded that Mourino’s plane had been flying too close to a much bigger jet plane ahead of it on the flight path to land at Mexico City airport, possibly causing a fatal wave of turbulence.

Blake took office in July 2010, the fourth man to serve as interior minister under Calderon.

The last tweet on Blake’s twitter account was on November 4, when he paid tribute to Mourino.

“Today we remember Juan Camilo Mourino three years after his passing, a human being who worked toward the creation of a better Mexico,” Blake said.

The nation’s weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011.

More rain and snow was expected to persist in the West, while the East remained quiet on Saturday. Two weather features over the Western U.S. were expected to bring more precipitation to the region. To the south, a low pressure system spinning off the coast of California continued to move southward, remaining just offshore. However, flow around this system expected to continue pushing cool and moist air onshore, allowing for scattered showers to develop along the coastal regions. Only light showers were anticipated in the interiors, while light snow may persist in the Sierras. Meanwhile to the north, a trough of low pressure expected to quickly advance southeastward from the Pacific Northwest and into the Northern Rocky Mountains. Moderate to heavy snow showers were expected in addition to strong winds across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Snowfall accumulation was expected to range from four to eight inches, up to a foot at highest mountain peaks. With strong wind gusts from 30 to 40 mph, dangerous travel conditions were expected, especially at high mountain passes. Caution should be used on the roads.

In the East, a low pressure system in eastern Canada was expected to move further eastward and away from the region. The Great Lakes was expected to start drying out as lake effect rain and snow showers diminished. High pressure over the Plains was expected to slide eastward, bringing more dry and cool air into the East. However, plenty of daytime sunshine was expected to allow for a gradual warming trend. The Southeast and Lower Mississippi River Valley was expected to see slightly warmer temperatures, with highs reaching into the mid-60s.

The Northeast and Great Lakes were expected to see highs in the mid-50s. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a morning low of 1 degree at West Yellowstone, Mont. to a high of 88 degrees at Fort Stockton, Texas

95% Weekend

All Critics (63) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (59) | Rotten (3)

It’s a definitive example of naturalistic moviemaking — you feel you’re breathing the air that the characters are breathing.

Its final moments offer a vision of what a contemporary romance can achieve: an appreciative gasp of truth, a wet-eyed hope for more.

One of the truest, most beautiful movies ever made about two strangers.

If you’ve ever met someone who changed your life in the space of days, you’ll relate to something in this movie.

The organ that “Weekend” is most concerned with isn’t the one you might think, but the human heart.

In just a short period of time, a weekend hookup tests the boundaries each man has set for himself.

It’s splendidly played with an understated intensity that deftly captures the shifting emotional tone of the relationship.

Offers up the kind of subtle, truthful relationship drama that’s all too rare in cinema.

There’s a fresh, sweaty, honest, unpretentious air to it, and when they part, with Glen on his way to spend a year working in Portland, Oregon, we genuinely believe that something like love has come into their yearning lives.

Writer-director Andrew Haigh has a delicate, sensitive touch, and this is appealing as a simple peek into modern romance… but there’s a sense of wishful thinking — or even desperation — that I suspect is not intended here.

There’s a deceptive simplicity to British writer-director Andrew Haigh’s poignant, fluent character study, which has already earned comparisons to Before Sunrise.

Haigh treats his subject matter with matter-of-fact realism. If this is a new voice on the British film scene, it’s a refreshingly adult one.

It is a tender, humane film, with an easy, unforced cinematic language: a film that doesn’t need to try too hard.

Haigh’s film is written with a shrewd, unpretentious feel for the way young people behave when they’re getting to know each other, shot with a keen eye for urban solitude, and completely nails its seemingly modest tasks…

Haigh, writing, directing and producing, drives through the meeting-cute introductions and the medium-molten sex scenes as if they were merely marks on the map, to follow the simple, complex arc of an evolving love affair.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an emotionally engaging and strikingly naturalistic romantic drama with terrific central performances from newcomers Tom Cullen and Chris New.

A remarkable film that signals an exciting new voice in the LGBT landscape.

Sexy, provocative, engrossing and occasionally ornery, it should appeal to anyone whose curiosity about someone new has provoked them to question their own identity.

Terrific low-key turns from the two leads inject their growing bond with genuine emotion, making this a love story that will get under the skin of romantics everywhere.

Cullen and New are British stage actors with little background in film. Haigh’s only previous film was a documentary. Perhaps because they don’t feel bound by a set of rules, they’ve created one of the year’s most enjoyable surprises.

Weekend is the year’s wittiest hymn to romance.

Weekend might be a small film recounting an intimate relationship, but it speaks to the grandest of ideas.

By the end of their weekend together, it feels like you know these guys and, even better, like you’re rooting for them.

A heartfelt romantic comedy, a touching rumination on sexual identity and a striking look at what it is to be gay in 21st Century Britain.

Fahad Faruqui: Recipe For Divorce: The Wealth-Driven Marriage

Arranged marriages are common throughout the Muslim world — primarily because dating before marriage is a big “no-no” and also because “parents know best.” While some, very few, fall in love after marriage, other wealth-driven traditional marriages are nothing but a recipe for disaster.

A 31-year-old Pakistani bachelor from Karachi told me that he has no qualms about an arranged marriage. But since he wants to be sure that his bride-to-be is the one that he wants to spend the rest of his life with (without a shred of doubt), he doesn’t accept the decision with the nonchalant attitude of “let’s see if it works out or not.” Being pushed into marrying a girl who he’s not the least bit attracted to, he is unsure how to deal with his family members as they aggressively lobby for that girl.

“I don’t ask for much,” he said, adding that “the push is due to the fact that she’s from a ‘good family.’” In explaining what constitutes a good family, the would-be bridegroom says: “what else, they are moneyed and politically well-connected and that has blinded nearly everyone in my family.”

Though the priorities may differ from one family to another, wealth remains a factor that is integral to the choice of a marriage partner, regardless of which strata of society you look at. The gardener at my family home in Karachi cried bitterly as he narrated how his daughter’s marriage was called off because he couldn’t meet the groom’s increasing demands for dowry. The dynamics remain the same when you look at the educated and wealthy classes, the only difference being that they use the code words “good family” or “socially acceptable” as euphemisms for “wealthy.”

A marriage between individuals of differing socioeconomic status could benefit one party or the other, or a marriage between equals could be a merger of two giants aiming to further climb the social ladder. Whatever the circumstances of an economics-driven match, there’s certainly nothing wrong with marrying into wealth if the couple is agreeable and is able to lead a happily married life. But more often than not, I’ve seen such arrangements, in which compatibility is overlooked in favor of economic gain, lead to a debacle.

Though divorce is religiously permitted in Islam, it is considered the the most abhorring thing by God.

According to a 2011 report, “more than 100 divorces are registered in [Lahore] family courts in a day.” Besides the ego that influences two people to split apart, “forced marriages and early marriages” contribute to failed marriages in Pakistan, said psychiatrist Najeeb Zaheer. Other Muslim-majority countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt, are witnessing a similar trend.

“The [Jeddah] court registers 40 marriages and 20 divorces a day,” Somayya Jabrti, now deputy editor of Arab News, wrote in an article published in 2003. “The situation has only worsened,” a Saudi said on grounds of anonymity. In addition to polygamy and illicit relationships that fuel breakups, lack of compatibility is also to be blamed for failed marriages.

When I asked around, friends in Saudi Arabia claimed that they knew divorcees in every other household in their social circle, despite the social stigma attached with divorced women and the enormous pain a woman has to endure in separating from a spouse unwilling to cut the marital cord.

In Egypt, while I was teaching high school Social Studies in an American curriculum school, nearly every other teacher said that I was wasting my breath in pushing my female students to challenge themselves in order to realize their true potential. The reason I was given was that most of the girls that I taught would be married off after high school or college and divorced soon thereafter — at least that’s the trend.

On my parting note, I implored my students to realize their dreams. When I had joined the school, shortly after the Egyptian revolution, most of them replied with blank stares when I asked, “what do you want to do with your life?” Five months later, almost everyone had something to say. Interestingly, one of the 10th graders, who perhaps understood my emphasis on “doing something constructive in life,” said “don’t worry…I will not marry a rich man and end up divorced soon after…I will become an architect and make you proud.” Well, I truly hope so!

Even though the correlation between marriage for money and the increasing divorce rate cannot be backed by quantifiable data, one cannot reasonably expect marriages devoid of love and respect to stand the test of time.

Being coerced into marriage — because wealth, power and tribal ties are good for you — is the beginning of a slippery slope towards renouncing all autonomy in life decisions for those willing to sell their souls for material gain.

For those looking for a lasting relationship with their mate, they may want to investigate what they really want in a spouse. If you want buff, you’ll get buff, but, hey, don’t expect emotional support. If you want fair and lovely, you’ll probably find someone, but how long that romance will last is a question that you have to ponder.

“A marriage based on the desire for security, money, privileges, culture, beauty or lust can never be a fulfilling marriage,” said Maryam Agha, 27, from Karachi.

Marriage, as a union between two people, tends to last when it’s predicated upon profound understanding of the spouse, coupled with unconditional acceptance of each other, and underpinned with patience to endure through thick and thin. Anything less will not likely endure.

Voice of UK?s Siri Is Now Speaking Out (to Apple?s Chagrin)

Imagine the surprise of U.K. resident Jon Briggs when he turned on his TV, heard a commercial for the iPhone 4S personal assistant Siri, and heard his own voice responding to commands. Briggs had lent his voice to a company called Scansoft for its text-to-speech services, which were later purchased by Nuance and used to develop Siri. Briggs, a former technology journalist, “fell into” voiceover work, according to the Telegraph.

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727 (AT&T)

The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket ($149.99) is a big slab of Android, but with a twist: It’s one of the first two smartphones to support AT&T’s brand new 4G LTE network, the other being the HTC Vivid ($99.99, 4 stars). We’re giving the Editors’ Choice nod to the Skyrocket, thanks to its faster performance, lightweight design, and vibrant (if not as high resolution) screen, but the Vivid is also a very powerful smartphone?you can’t go wrong with either one.

Design, Screen, and Call Quality
The Skyrocket looks a lot like the Galaxy S II ($99.99, 4.5 stars). It features?a matte, slightly textured back panel,?black glossy plastic sides. It measures 5.15 by 2.75 by 0.37 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.65 ounces. At least, that’s what Samsung and AT&T both claim. But if you lay the Skyrocket flat on a table and place a ruler next to it like I did, you’ll find it’s actually about 0.42 inches deep. It sticks up noticeably higher than an iPhone 4 I had nearby (which rings in exactly at its quoted 0.37 inch figure). The Skyrocket is still thinner than other LTE devices we’ve tested, though, and it’s certainly lighter in weight.

The massive 4.5-inch, 480-by-800-pixel, Super AMOLED Plus display is as vibrant and colorful as on other Samsung phones; it’s also two tenths of an inch larger than the Galaxy S II’s display. But at this screen size, I’d like to see more pixel density. On the plus side, you can read it outdoors, which was a problem with earlier AMOLED panels, and the gorgeous color and deep blacks really stand out.?On a screen this size, you get big keys, so typing on the on-screen keyboard isn’t a problem in either portrait or landscape mode.

The Skyrocket is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), tri-band HSPA+ (850/1900/2100 MHz), and dual-band LTE (700/1700 MHz) device. It also has 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; it connected to my own WPA2-encrypted network without issue.

There’s no getting around it: LTE is fast. In a series of tests in and around Boston, MA, I saw data speeds ranging from 16Mbps to 25Mbps down, and 12Mbps up. Be aware that AT&T is still building out its LTE network; currently, it’s only available in nine cities in the U.S. When not in an LTE area, the Skyrocket is rated as an HSPA+ 21 device; the Vivid is just HSPA+ 14.4. However, I saw roughly the same real-world HSPA+ speeds with both the Vivid and the Skyrocket, averaging up to 8Mbps down.

The Skyrocket is also a good voice phone. Callers sounded warm and clear through the earpiece, with no background hiss. The only flaw I heard was a faint wash of static around some syllables, but I had to strain to hear it in a very quiet room. Transmissions through the microphone were clear. Calls also sounded fine through a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). There’s no voice dialing of any kind, which is a bizarre omission on a top-of-the-line smartphone. The speakerphone went quite loud, but distorted considerably at several of the higher volume settings; you won’t want to use it for long conference calls. Battery life was good at 6 hours and 47 minutes of talk time.
